Birdie and a hand

Street art piece at Tou Scene, Stavanger. Unknown artist

For the last couple of years, I have called Stavanger, on the western coast of Norway, home, whilst studying for my mandatory masters degree at the university there. Stavanger is filled with contradictions. On one hand it is a vivid remnant of the pietistic christian culture with streets lined with churches and lodges of abstinence, and on the other hand the big oil industry, money and a rich nightlife. Street art meets a zero tollerance policy whilst being applauded for giving the city something to be proud of. A birdie and a hand (for lifes rich demand).

Flagged as 'maybe'

All ears
Do you hear them scream to get
out into the world?

They scream to get out, show what they can do. But I want them to wait, see if they are ready. I let them roam the closed quarters, discover friend among themselves. Some turn out to be outcasts or not team players. I have a hard-drive full of teenage photographs, screaming to be seen. I guess I love them all too much to let go...

There are too many faces around
Yet none of them is yours

Am I the only one feeling lonesome?

I have gotten into street art photography, and I can't get out. Whenever I turn a corner there is something new, and everything is so exciting I can't wait to see a contrasty B/W print of it, slightly blue-toned. This is my time and I am thrilled to be alive.

This is not the last post about NuArt'11, I promise, but as the festival is drawing to a close, I want to thank Martin, Marte, Tore and Leon for making Nuart what it is, and the artists for spending hours making the streets of Stavanger more colourful. And of course, thank you all for letting me hang around and photograph your world.

The last drop

David Choe was the last person to set down the cans, after he av DVS-1 layed the final touches on their room in Ølhallene.
As soon as scaffolding and all the mess is out, the lights will be set up and everything will be ready for the opening of Nuart 2011 at 19:00 october 1st. Will I see you there?

Works in progress. Between shooting the artists at work preparing Nuart '11, I took my tripod (well, Leons tripod anyway, mine is missing an important part) and my little lights out to shoot the excellent work surrounding Tou Scene. Tou has turned into a free place for artists and there is a lot of ground to cover when I try to photograph everything.

This work, "Precarious Kapitaliksom" is one of the many, created by the Dotmasters I belive...

Nuart 2011

The work for Nuart 2011 has barely begun at Tou scene Ølhallene, and the opening is just a week away. The walls are painted white or black and the first artist was in place when I dropped by friday afternoon. I'll be following the festival throughout, so come back for more soon.

'Til then, follow Nuart on Facebook!
